The Summer School focused on alternative approaches to answer key ecological questions in the form of debates among an impressive list of scientists working on animal movements. Each lesson was composed of lectures on alternative approaches to answer specific ecological questions, and DEMOS with the scripts required to implement those approaches using commonly freely available software such as R, PostgreSQL, QGIS.
We started by building a SpatialLite database for animal GPS data and environmental data, then we modeled trajectories, we performed statistical and mechanistic home ranges, and finally estimated habitat selection. In addition, we debated frequentist vs. bayesian approaches (Subash Lele & Guillaume Chapron), and we had a lecture on advanced spatio-temporal databases (Ralf Güting).
